EMSTEEL, a prominent UAE-based steel and building materials manufacturer, has announced an ambitious decarbonization strategy aimed at aligning with the UAE's Net-Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative. According to the company statement, the plan involves significant reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, using 2019 as the base year. EMSTEEL aims to reduce absolute GHG emissions by 40% in its steel business unit and by 30% in its cement business division by 2030, with the ultimate goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. This commitment also aligns with the UAE’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and the Paris Agreement.

The company has also pledged to contribute to the UAE’s goal of a 27% reduction in industrial emissions by 2035 from 2019 levels. To achieve these targets, EMSTEEL will focus on key decarbonization strategies, such as enhancing energy efficiency, incorporating advanced process optimization technologies, and utilizing alternative fuels and raw materials in steel and cement production. Additionally, the company plans to accelerate the use of clean and renewable energy to cover 100% of its electricity demand by 2030.

EMSTEEL Group CEO Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi highlighted the significance of the strategy, stating, "Our decarbonization strategy not only aligns with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 goals but also positions EMSTEEL as a global leader in low-carbon steel and cement production." He also noted that in 2023, EMSTEEL's scope 1 and 2 emissions stood at 4.5 million tons of carbon dioxide, 23% below the baseline year of 2019.

Headquartered in Abu Dhabi, EMSTEEL is the UAE’s largest steel and building materials manufacturer. The company leverages cutting-edge technologies to supply high-quality finished products to both the local market and over 70 international markets. Majority-owned by ADQ, EMSTEEL operates 16 state-of-the-art plants with a capacity of 3.5 million tons of steel and 4.6 million tons of cement per annum.

The UAE's Net Zero 2050 Strategy outlines the country's ambitious journey towards achieving net zero emissions and sets out the timeline and mechanisms for this transition. The strategy is designed to act as a catalyst for economic and societal advancement by leading the transition to net zero emissions. It is expected to create 200,000 jobs across the solar, battery, and hydrogen sub-sectors, contribute around 3% to the country's gross domestic product (GDP), and enhance export opportunities.

The strategy encompasses over 25 programs across key sectors, including power, industry, transportation, buildings, waste, and agriculture. EMSTEEL's comprehensive decarbonization strategy is a significant step towards achieving the UAE's Net Zero 2050 goals and demonstrates the company's commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
